Larnaca is a city on the southeast coast of Cyprus. The major international airport of Cyprus, Larnaca International Airport is located in this city. In ancient times, Larnaca was known as Kition, or in Latin Citium. The biblical name Kittim, though derived from Citium, was in fact used quite generally for Cyprus as a whole, and occasionally by the Hebrews for the Greeks and Romans. Larnaca is colloquially known as “Skala” to the Greek Cypriot community and “İskele” to the Turkish Cypriots.
Larnaca is the oldest living city of Cyprus. Legend has it that the first settlement at the spot was founded by Noah’s great-grandson Kittim. Unlike other ancient cities of Cyprus, which were abandoned by their inhabitants, Larnaca from the time of its founding 6,000 years ago, has existed and still exists on the same site.
The city of Larnaka is well-known for its picturesque sea-front which includes rows of palm trees. Much of the activity is centred around the city promenade during the major festivals. The most important of these for the city of Larnaka is Kataklysmos or the Festival of the Flood, celebrated in early summer with a series of cultural events.
It has a population of 72,000 and is the island’s second commercial port and an important tourist resort. To the north of the town lies the island’s oil refinery. The famous stoic philosopher Zeno of Citium hailed from the city. It is said he began his stoic teaching after losing everything he had in a shipwreck.
A famous Athenian general, Kimon, died at sea defending the city of Citium in a major battle with the Persians of Xerxes. On his deathbed, he urged his officers to conceal his death from both allied and Persians. The quote “Και Νεκρος Ενικα” “Even in death he was victorious” refers to Kimon. A statue of “Kimon the Athenian” stands proudly on the sea front promenade of modern Larnaca.
In 1974 Turkey invaded the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Army displaced by force about 200,000 Greek-Cypriots, the inhabitants of its Northern part. Larnaca received and welcomed over 40.000 refugees, thus tripling its population overnight, now at 65,000.
Larnaca – Tourist Resort
Larnaca is one of the major seaside resorts in Cyprus. There are numerous beaches in and around Larnaca which which extend for approx 25 km (16 mi). The main Phinikoudes and McKenzie beaches both have been awarded Blue Flags for environmental cleanliness. The archaeological sites and its six museums are in the centre of the town. Summer sports and sea activities are readily available. The shops are well stocked and medical care is good. There is one main six-screen cinema called ‘K-Cineplex’ which opened in 2001 and is on the edge of the town. Most English language films are shown in English with Greek subtitles.
Within the wider Larnaca district there are 9,500 hotel beds, about 10% of the total all island tourist capacity. Along the Larnaca Bay there are luxurious beach hotels and also hotel apartments or holiday apartments within all price ranges. Prices are generally lower than the rest of the island.
Places of interest
The most important site of Larnaca are the ruins of Ancient Kitium. The earliest architectural remains date back to the 13th century B.C. The area was rebuilt by Achaean Greeks. The remains of the Cyclopean Walls, made of giant blocks and the complex of the five temples, are particularly interesting.
Larnaca Salt Lake fills with water during the winter and is visited by flocks of flamingoes who stay here from November till the end of March. It dries up in the summer. It used to yield a good quality of salt which was scraped from its dried up surface. The salt from this lake is now considered unfit for human consumption.
Ayia Phaneromeni is a rock cavern with two chambers. The structure suggests that it once was a pagan tomb, possibly dating back to Phoenician times. The place is credited with various magical properties: thus those who suffer from headaches or other diseases walk three times round it and leave a piece of clothing or a tuft of their hair on the grill in front of the south window. It is also much frequented by girls, whose lovers are overseas, who come here to pray for their safety.
The Church of Lazarus is another magnificent Orthodox Church in Larnaca which was built in the town over the tomb of St. Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha. He died here and was buried in the church named after him. In 890 A.D. his tomb was found bearing the inscription “Lazarus the friend of Christ”. The marble sarcophagus can be seen inside the church under the Holy of Holies.
The Hala Sultan Tekke is about 5 km (3 mi) west of Larnaka, on the banks of the Salt Lake. It is equivalent to the Christian “monastery”. Within the precincts of this Tekke is the tomb of Umm Haram, said to be the foster mother of Mohammed. According to Moslem tradition Umm Haram died on this spot in 647 A.D. while accompanying the Arab invaders. She was buried here and later the Ottomans built the present mosque in her honour.
The Old Aqueduct known as “The Kamares”, stands outside the town on the way to Limassol. It was built in Roman style in 1745 to carry water from a source about 6 miles south of Larnaka into the town. The aqueduct is illuminated at night.
Another site of interest is the Fort of Larnaca which was erected by the Turks in 1625. This fort is now a museum and its inner courtyard is used as an open air garden – theatre during the summer months, by kind permission of the director of antiquities.
There you have it, there is certainly plenty to see and do in Larnaca.

1. Portugal
In a recent survey, holiday villas in Portugal proved to be the most popular destination for self catering golf accommodation. There were many reasons for this, but predominantly there is a good choice of budget airlines to Portugal from almost anyway in Europe. 3. France
Beach holidays in France are very popular, in particular with families and drivers from the UK. 4. Florida
The best beaches to visit in Florida are huge in number, but the most popular will be determined by where you take your vacation. Both beaches take around an hour to reach and can be combined with a visit to Cape Canaveral. 5. Dubai
Dubai is a fascinating beach holiday destination and sparkling city that will amaze you and transform your dream holiday ideas forever. Although Dubai is basically a desert, it really has many attractive beach holiday locations to choose from, and it’s the No 1 Financial hub of the Middle East. Dubai is also home to a Grand Prix Circuit, the world’s tallest building – Burj Kalifa , plus the famous 7-Star Burj Al Arab hotel. Dubai has created what is commonly known as the 8th wonder of the world – Palm Jumeirah. This monstrous yet gorgeous creation is now home to an array of stunning holiday villas in Dubai, with pristine white sandy beaches for every property that adorn the Palm Island Fronds. 6. Turkey

7. Barbados

10) Cyprus
The island of Cyprus lies in the eastern mediterranean close to Turkey, Syria and Lebanon. Cyprus benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with long hot summers and relatively mild winters. The capital is Nicosia, and is located in land but the country is an island and is therefore totally surrounded by water. The most popular coastal regions within Cyprus include villas in Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca and Farmagusta. Cyprus has been awarded more than 50 blue flag beaches, located at resorts which provide apartments in Protaras, Ayia Napa, Paphos, Larnaca and Limossol.

When many chose to work or retire abroad it is easy to forget about the long term and concentrate on immediate issues, such as what to take and choosing a home. Many forget about the long term and often important aspects which have a profound effect on our lives or the lives of the ones we love. Although some have been on holiday to Cyprus before moving permanently, it is often not enough to prepare UK expats for the differences in lifestyle, services and legal aspects they encounter once they have make the move. The following article, written by UK expat professionals, explores some of the differences you may encounter as a UK expat in Cyprus. It includes some useful information that you may not already be aware of and will need to know in order to save and make money as well as prepare for your future life and even your death.
Retiring in Cyprus

Cyprus is one of the most popular destinations for Britons to retire overseas. Although retirees can benefit from the warm climate, fantastic food and excellent healthcare on offer, many pensioners are not aware of the many benefits available to them as retirees with regards to their pension. Below are some tips for those already retired or retiring in Cyprus in the near future:
Speak to a well reputed Independent Financial Advisor regarding your pensions and investments. Everyone’s cases are different and it is important for all UK expats to seek specialist advice in order to ensure they maximise their pension benefits whilst living in Cyprus.
Tax-conscious UK expats are now recognising the benefits of Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) in ensuring that they will be viewed as non-domiciled by HMRC. UK pensions, including Final Salary or Occupational Pension Schemes (if not in payment), can be easily transferred to a tax neutral QROPS in well regulated jurisdictions such as Guernsey and New Zealand. Not only is this more tax efficient, but individuals will also have a say as to where they want their funds invested rather than being allowed no input at all whilst their funds remain in the UK.
Transferring your private and group pension funds to one of our recommended Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes or QROPS can benefit you and your family in a variety of ways. You are able to gain complete control over your money, avoid the Annuity Trap, leave 100% of your fund to your nominated beneficiaries on death and take your lump sum free of UK income tax. If you plan to be an expat for 5 years or more, you may be surprised at the many benefits you and your family can reap by transferring to a QROPS.
Law in Cyprus

Mark now operates in Cyprus, offering specialist advice to UK expats regarding Cypriot and British Wills and Probate. Below are some of Mark’s top tips for living in Cyprus:
Many UK expats are under the assumption that they do not have to make a Will in Cyprus if they already have a Will in the UK. This may not be the case depending on your individual circumstances.
There is no estate duty or inheritance tax for Cyprus domiciles, but if you are domiciled in the UK then you will be taxed 40% on your worldwide estate, including your property in Cyprus. It is important to speak with a legal professional about the subject of domicile to establish where you are currently domiciled.
In Cyprus, a house or flat owned jointly by two people, such as a husband and wife, will not automatically be passed to the survivor as it would have in the UK under “joint tenancy” law, even if there may be two names on the purchase contract. This is even the case for joint bank accounts in Cyprus. Making a Will in Cyprus can solve this problem.
Death and bereavement is a difficult time for those left behind. Make it less stressful by ensuring you have made a valid Will before you die to ensure your loved ones are looked after when you are gone.
Taxation in Cyprus
John Horton F.C.A. is a UK Chartered Accountant and had a successful practice in Birmingham for 30 years prior to relocating to Cyprus with his wife Sue in 2005. John has extended his business qualifications by becoming a Certified Public Account in Cyprus and is currently practicing in Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca areas. Below are a couple of important tax points especially for retired people living in Cyprus:
It can be beneficial to discuss your tax situation with a qualified account as Cyprus has a generous tax structure especially for pensioners. For example, pensioners are able to choose whether to pay a flat 5% rate on their income in excess of a small personal allowance, or to be allowed a larger allowance or tax-free band and then pay tiered rates of tax up to 30% on income in excess of the threshold. For example:-
If you receive up to € 19,500.00 per annum, you may pay no tax at all,
€ 19,500.01 to € 28,000.00 you will only have to pay 20% tax,
€ 28,000.01 – € 36,300.00 you will pay 25% tax, and
€ 36,300.01 and above expect to pay 30% tax.
The Double Taxation Treaty between Cyprus and the UK means that for all pensioners who are tax resident in Cyprus, all forms of British pensions may be paid without the deduction of British tax. This includes the state pension, company or group pensions and private pensions. Many expats are unaware of this and may find they have been paying tax twice unnecessarily. If this is the case for you it is advisable to contact a qualified accountant as it is possible to recover any tax you may have overpaid.
